The Hospital was awarded the Grand Prize for Energy Conservation for 2014, that is the Minister for Economy and Industry Award sponsored by the Energy Conservation Center Foundation and supported by the Ministry for Economy and Industry. The Energy Conservation Award is given to corporations, regional governments, research institutions and other entities that have shown exemplary efforts towards energy conservation, developed advanced energy efficient products, technology and procedures. The award ceremony was held on Wednesday, January 28, 2015, at the Big Site in Tokyo, where Mr. Satoru Komatsumoto, the Director received the award on the behalf of the hospital.

Toyota, Honda, Sharp and other well -known large corporations were among a total of 140 entries that applied to the 2014 Energy Conservation Award. After passing the initial review process, the Grand Prize was awarded to the hospital subsequent to Director Komatsumoto’s personal presentation and an onsite field review by the judges.

The hospital was chosen on the basis of their “Action Plan to build a Next Generation “Green” Hospital for Large Scale General Hospitals.” The plan to build a next generation Green Hospital was formulated at the same time as the move to a new building was being proposed. Working together with the facility designers, Director Komatsumoto personally led the efforts to purse the concept of an ideal hospital, with energy conserving/low CO2 wemission standards. The Action Plan outlined how it was successfully able to lower energy consumption by approximately 45% compared the average large scale general hospital.

In the three years since the new hospital was opened in 2011, we have received about 3,000 visitors. Due to this further recognition brought about by this award, the hospital has become a focal point of attention not only from the field of medicine but also architecture and the energy industry.

This global program asks for contestants to submit excellent architecture in the field of healthcare from all over the world which are then reviewed and voted on by a jury of international specialists to determine which healthcare building should be internationally recognized. We were selected as the first time recipients of this newly established prestigious prize.
Only healthcare buildings built subsequent to 2011, and in use, are eligible. Selection is based on the following criteria; (1) healing environment, (2) physical wellbeing, (3) accessibility/ease of use, (4) health (5) self-reliance, (6) functionality for everyday activities, (7) mental wellbeing and (8) social wellbeing.

This year, there were over 40 recommendations and submissions from all over the world. Upon receiving word that Ashikaga Red Cross Hospital had been nominated as one of the 10 finalists, both Director Komatsumoto and Deputy Director Washimi were able to attend the Award Ceremony and hear the announcement that Ashikaga Red Cross Hospital had received first prize.
The announcements of third prize to the United Kingdom’s Alder Hey Children’s Hospital and then of second prize to the Netherland’s Meander Medisch Centrum were made in that order. When the first prize winner was finally announced as being Ashikaga Red Cross Hospital, the audience rose and gave a standing ovation.
Invited to the podium, Director Komatsumoto after thanking the Federation gave a speech in English explaining the building’s concept, energy conservation efforts and other aspects of the hospital. Impressed, numerous requests to tour the hospital have already been received from delegates from around the world.

Five years after the new Ashikaga Red Cross Hospital was opened, it has received numerous domestic awards such as the First Carbon Neutral Award (JABMEE), 23rd Japan Institute of Healthcare Architecture Award (JIHA), and the 2014 Energy Conservation Award (METI), which has already resulted in the hospital receiving over 3,000 international and domestic visitors. With this award, it is likely to lead to a further increase in the number of visitors from abroad.
Director Komatsumoto commented as follows; “We are extremely grateful that our concept and plan have not only been recognized domestically but also internationally. I am confident that recognition as number one in the world for this award which evaluates both hard and soft aspects of a project, will be a source of pride and encouragement for all of our staff.”
