If you require care…

Emergency Medical Care Center

Ashikaga Red Cross Hospital’s Emergency Medical Care Center is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Handling over 4,000 ambulances and 13,000 patients a year, it’s one of the premier emergency medical treatment centers in northern Kanto, fully staffed with doctors, nurses and even in-house paramedics trained in emergency medicine.

Does someone require emergency treatment?

If you believe yourself or someone else requires emergency treatment for a potentially life-threatening condition, call 119 on any telephone to request an ambulance (or report a fire). Alternately, you can bring the patient to the hospital yourself, but you should never drive yourself if you suspect a heart attack, stroke or similar conditions. In such a case, call an ambulance.

If you’re bringing the patient yourself, please call 0284-21-0121 prior to arriving if at all possible to let us know that you’re coming.

If you’re calling an ambulance, unfortunately, in the cities of Ashikaga, Sano, Ota, Tatebayashi, Kiryu and smaller surrounding towns, ambulance dispatchers do not usually speak languages other than Japanese.  Ideally, have a Japanese-speaking acquaintance make the call for you.

If, however, no Japanese speaking people are immediately available, you should be prepared to be able to give your address to the dispatcher and a brief description of the emergency. Some common Japanese emergency medical terms that may be useful are shown below:

Always bring your Insurance Documentation!

You should always bring your national or social insurance card (hokensho) with you when coming to the hospital or any clinic. Copies are not accepted. Without the card, you may need to pay cash for any treatment received.

Important:
When being treated for an injury related to a workplace accident or traffic accident, be sure to tell the emergency room receptionist as the procedures for payment related to such incidents differs.

What about less-serious conditions?

If someone’s life is not threatened, visiting an appropriate local clinic is the best course of action. But if you’d prefer to get immediate care on evenings or weekends when such clinics are not open, municipalities offer holiday and nighttime treatment clinics. Information for Ashikaga, Sano, Tatebayashi, Ota and Kiryu are below. If you require non-emergency medical treatment at times when these clinics are closed, such as year-end holidays or early morning hours, then you should visit a hospital ER.

Please respect the nature of emergency medical care…

  • The ER is designed to treat patients with conditions that are life-threatening, or that could have serious long-lasting consequences without immediate treatment. Patients with less-serious conditions may need to wait for treatment when others require more urgent care.
  • Due to the nature of emergency care, we cannot honor requests for treatment by specific doctors.
  • During nights, weekends and holidays, the ER doctors operate on a rotation, and we cannot guarantee that a specialist in a particular discipline will be available.
  • Patients treated during nights, weekends and holidays may have their treatment limited to standard procedures, requiring a second visit to the hospital if more specialized treatment is needed.
  • The ER is unable to issue prescriptions for long-term use.

After-Hours Emergency Medical Fees

Patients treated in the ER will be billed an after-hours emergency medical fee of 5000 yen in addition to the costs of their actual treatment. If your condition does not require immediate care, we recommend you wait until normal business hours to visit a clinic or the hospital if you wish to avoid these fees.
